Leaving Your Past Behind You And Moving Forward

Most of us can get to a point in life where we feel lost, and we need to decide what direction our lives should take. Our days easily get filled up with things that we think we should do; and we seem unable to figure out the things that we were meant to do, or the things we should give up in order to stop being stuck in life. I’ve learned that the first thing we should keep in mind when it comes to moving forward is that we don’t have to live with the burden of guilt for what has happened in the past. A past left unresolved have the power to make us miserable forever. Our future can be brighter only if we allow it to be designed by our deepest and most beautiful intentions. We have to let go of the past in order to consider the possibility that the cosmic plan may be preparing something bigger and better than what we have already experienced in our lives. We belong to an universe of attraction and energy, and our lives can change for the better if we give up carrying the energy that is holding us back. Getting back our enthusiasm for life comes with making peace with our past.

Meditation brought me the clarity that everything that happens happens in the present, and the past is not a reality unless I want it to be. All my memories from the past are thoughts that I’m having in the present. The emotions that I feel relating to those thoughts are also happening in the present moment. The sadness, anger or hurt that I feel because I’m bringing those memories back is making the past my current reality. Having this understanding is life changing, because it gives me the power to change my perspective and focus on what is in front of me right now. Healing from the past is all about living in the present moment.

Give up the excuses that you keep telling yourself about why you can’t be happy. Remember that the life you live is the life you build for yourself, and no one else can succeed for you on your behalf. You must refuse to stay stuck in the past, and the only way to do that is by accepting that you can’t change your past, but you can change the way you perceive it, and handle it from now on. It is time to stop past mistakes to define who you are. When your thoughts are directed to the past, you are preventing yourself from enjoying life. Forgiving yourself for past mistakes neutralises the story from the past so it loses its power over you.

Understand how important it is to take full responsibility for your happiness. Your happiness is your responsibility alone, not anyone else’s. It’s your job to let go of anything that interferes with your present happiness, causes you grief, or restricts your future. Constant rethinking about past decisions gives you anxiety. Be patient and kind with yourself. Try to look for the lessons learned from your mistakes and recognise that life lessons make you wiser. Practicing acceptance becomes an easier thing to do when you remember that even in the darkest of times, you can find a lesson that enriched your life.

Beating yourself up over things beyond your control is unreasonable. Holding on to the past can cause resentment towards yourself and others. You deserve the best, so take a deep breath, and let today be the day you learn the grace of letting go and the power of moving on by making a decision to adopt a new, positive perspective.
