Changing Old Habits

We all have some old habits that we might want to change. Changing old behaviours can be difficult and take time. However, it is possible to change your own habits with some proper planning, and by staying positive while you work towards your goal. Habits are behaviours that become automatic because they have been performed over and over again. Mindfulness is the key to apply small changes in our lives. Small changes can add up to a big transformation if you are determined to make better choices. Practicing mindful habit change lets you recognise when a self-defeating habit has been triggered, and let you interrupt the old routing by making a more effective response. But what is mindfulness? Mindfulness is paying attention in the present moment. When we are being mindful, we are aware of our thoughts, feelings, motivations, reactions, and responses. We are able to analyse our reactions and choose the wiser response for the situation we are in.

Being mindful and clearing your mind can be difficult in the beginning, but a positive attitude goes a long way when we focus on changing habits. When we concentrate on what we will gain from achieving balance in our lives, we are able to explore and discover the willpower we have within ourselves that were not known before. Meditation can be a way to experience mindfulness, and it can give you precious insights on how to achieve your goals. Through meditation, you can connect to your inner essence and discover that you have the tools to live the life you are destined to live.

When you are trying to get rid of what is holding you back and become aware of your true potential, character and motives, don’t fear failure. Making mistakes can be a good thing in your life’s journey. Keep in mind that the key to making mistakes into something valuable is to learn from them. Carefully examine a habit that you want to change and look for the reasons why you do it. Don’t consider it a mistake that can’t be rectified, introduce in your mind the idea that mistakes can actually help lead you to success.

Creating a new lifestyle can be incredibly challenging, but if you feel you aren’t living up to your potential and think your life is currently on the wrong path, you are craving a positive change in your life. Changing yourself requires honest reflection about your ideal self and current weaknesses. Set short and long term goals, then surround yourself with positive people who will help and guide you along the way. If someone else is paying attention to what you are doing, you are more likely to follow through. So announce your plans for your new positive habit to other people. If you don’t have a support system, don’t worry, just try to periodically self-evaluate your goals to stay on the right track. You are able to think about the choices you make throughout the day and why you make them. You will realise that the reasoning behind your choices is what got you where you are. Applying positive changes in your life means forming new choices based on new motivations.

It can be very tempting to have your goals set high, trying to be the best version of yourself when forming new, better habits in your routine. However, it can be easier to find success if you focus on steadily improving over time, rather than the end result. Remember that perfectionism can lead to anxiety about your goals and your progress.

The only way to introduce positive change in your life is by making choices, and if you choose to do nothing, that too is a choice. Our lives are a work in progress. Don’t rush into changing your habits; just take one step at a time and enjoy the process.
