Letting Go

February 27, 2016

Moving on is something that we often find it hard to do. In order to move on and leave the past behind, it’s critical for all of us to detach from fear and tap into our courage. Happiness can only occur if we are leading our life in a way that is aligned with our authentic self, and authenticity requires courage. If we want to see change happen in our life, we’ve got to get a vision that goes beyond our current reality. We need to understand that our past doesn’t define our present value or worth, unless we allow it.
When our thoughts continue to go back to the past, we become stuck there, and unable to move forward. In order to free ourselves from our past, and move forward, is important to know that we can’t get over the past until we accept it. We can’t revisit the past, but we can change the way we perceive it. Rather than just regretting stuff, examine what you have learnt from a past adversity, that can actually help you in the future. Be realistic, and avoid believing the past was so perfect that the present cannot be appreciated, or enjoyed at all.
Sometimes we over-estimate the past, and we idealise it in a way that makes us feel that the present can never be as good as our past once were. Look at past happiness as a reminder of how you can feel again in the present or future.Embracing change and letting go of your past, requires a positive attitude, no matter what you are going through in life. Journaling about the difficult moments of your past can help you come to terms with them and make them affect you less. Acceptance is important when you want to leave the past behind, so accept your past as part of yourself, and allow yourself to feel the way you feel about the past.
Once you accept that your past can not be changed, you will be able to realise that you can change how you feel about it, and associate past traumas or regrets, in order to come to terms with it. Doing this can really change how your past impacts your own life or behaviour. Also, by accepting that you are not perfect, and you don’t know everything, you open yourself to new experiences and you are able to learn new things.Think about the kind of person you want to be and have a mental list of things to think about that makes you feel optimistic about your future. Learn to relax, to slow down, to be aware of your surroundings, make a list of the talents, skills and thoughts that you have.
Revisit times in the past that showed how incredibly brave and strong you’ve been; times that you may have forgotten because you’ve been so focused on your past sins. Remember that a high ego does not identify with your soul.Sometimes when we don’t let go of the past, it can define our future. That’s why is important to identify our mental blocks: changing our thinking, changes our behaviour. When you feel overwhelmed, try doing anything that allows you to let out the feelings you are holding on to from the past, and do your best to spend time with someone you trust who can help keep you on the right track. Evaluate your social circle, and remember that people who constantly put you down may not be good to have in your life.It takes a lot of effort, time, patience and self-respect to keep moving forward, but no matter what happened in your past, you have the power to choose how you want to live today. Keep in mind that if you spend so much time obsessing about your weaknesses and things you want to change, you’ll never find the motivation for improvement. Motivation has to be empowered in your own mind, so be positive, and focus on the progress you are making, rather than past setbacks.

You deserve to live a wonderful life, and you have the ability to decide who you want to be in this life. Tap into your inner power and in order to reach the endless source of energy within yourself. When you finally let go of the past, something better comes along.
