The feast day of Easter was originally a pagan celebration of renewal and rebirth. Celebrated in the early spring, the date honoured the pagan Saxon goddess Eastre. But when the early missionaries converted the Saxons to Christianity, because the holiday fell around the same time as the traditional memorial of Christ’s resurrection from the dead, it was merged with the pagan celebration, and became know as Easter. Since then, the meaning of Easter is about the gift of eternal life and forgiveness of sins.
Easter symbolises Jesus Christ’s victory over death. His resurrection represents the eternal life that is granted to all who believe in Him. The meaning of Easter also symbolises the complete verification of all that Jesus preached and taught while on Earth. His resurrection changed all that and gave final and irrefutable proof that He was really the Son of God and that He had conquered death once and for all.
As the Bible says, “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” When we think about this, we understand that God reaches out in love to us and wants us to be His child. “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe on His name.” So, we can choose to ask Jesus Christ to forgive our sins and come in to our lives as our Lord and Saviour.
Easter is so much more than just a change of seasons. It is a proof of God’s promise of eternal life. It is a wonderful time of hope and reassurance to all of us, because it represents a new beginning. The same way as its symbol, (an egg) represents a brand new life. So, if you are going through a hard time, if you feel defeated by your problems, this time represents that there is a turning point from destruction to glory and salvation. It means life over death, because Jesus’ death was not the end, and His Resurrection, brings us the reassurance of a brand new life.
The wonderful thing about Easter is about what Jesus did, and what He promises us. Jesus resurrection shows us that the spiritual is higher than the material. Jesus came to earth to proclaim freedom for believers, He took away our wrongdoings and and gave us hope. All because He loves us. Easter is a time to be grateful and remember that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. It is also a time to be strong in our faith and ask Him to guide our lives and hearts, and to be our Lord and Saviour. Jesus died on the cross for you because you are special, and your life is precious. Easter Sunday is the day of rejoicing that follows the sorrow of Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and it brings you a powerful message: you may be hurting and your heart may be broken, but you will have the opportunity of a new life. Celebrate Easter with a deep appreciation for this opportunity.
Easter is a time of rejoicing for Christians. Christ is hope and comfort. If Jesus is risen, we can be happy and hopeful, because He, Jesus, is someone in whom we can put absolute trust. May you enjoy the freshness of Easter, and remember that it brings you new beginnings and renewed possibilities; because He lives you can face tomorrow and all fear is gone. Life is worth living just because Jesus Christ lives.
