Dowsing is a type of divination used to locate water, buried metals or ores, gemstones, oil, and anything else you can think of without using any scientific equipment. It is also called diving and in the US it is often used to locate petrol or oil.

A Y- or L-shaped twig or rod, called a dowsing rod, divining rod, a “vining rod” or witching rod is sometimes used during dowsing, although some dowsers while others use pendulums or other equipment. However some mediums can simply sense the items required and do not use anything.

Dowsing dates back at least 8,000 years. Wall murals, estimated to be about 8,000 years old, discovered in the Tassili Caves of North Africa depict tribesmen surrounding a man with a forked stick, possibly dowsing for water.

Artwork from ancient China and Egypt shows people using forked tools in what might have been dowsing activities. Dowsing is mentioned in the Bible, when Moses and Aaron used a “rod” to locate water. It is first written about in the Middle Ages when dowsing was used to find coal, but was soon denounced as the work of the devil by the church.

No one can be quite sure how dowsing works; some believe it is a psychic connection and some that as everything gives out energy the dowser is tuning into that. But it so impressed Albert Einstein he said “I know very well that many scientists consider dowsing as they do astrology, as a type of ancient superstition. According to my conviction this is, however, unjustified. The dowsing rod is a simple instrument which shows the reaction of the human nervous system to certain factors which are unknown to us at this time.”

So here are a few easy steps to start you off –

  • Find a forked (“Y”-shaped) branch from a tree or bush. Hold the two ends on the forked side, one in each hand. Or bend two pieces of wire into an L shape – one for each hand.
  • Relax and clear your  mind for a few minutes before you begin
  • Calibrate your dowsing rod(s). Lay out cards numbered 1-5 face up and in a line with about 1-2 feet (1/2 meter) of separation between each card. Start at one end, holding your dowsing rod(s), and make a request, ask the rod(s) to pick out a specific card. Visualise the card and pass your rods over the top. Notice what they do over the card, do they dip down or up, do the cross or vibrate.
  • Now it’s times to go look for what you want, start small with stones or metal and once you have practiced for a while you can  ask to find whatever you want.
