Counselling is never an easy step to take and it takes a brave person to admit they need it. Our reader Elaine explains what you can expect and what to look for if you are thinking about counselling.

If you have come to that point in life where counselling is a way forward, it’s always worth doing a little research as there are so many theories and practices a available now. It also depends on the depth of therapy you feel you can undertake; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) will change your thought patterns about certain issues, changing how you deal with those thoughts. Psychotherapy works by talking through at depth issues and their origins, with some intervention and direction from the counsellor. There are other theories called humanistic therapy where the counsellor is a facilitator for the client to find their own solutions e.g. person centred. All of theories are now moving towards the relationship you have with your counsellor being as important as the theory followed and there is now a strand of counselling known as relational counselling which is all about the relationship.

You need to find a theory that works for you and the level you feel you can cope with, then search for a counsellor, don’t be afraid to try a few until you get the right one for you.

In your first session you will be expected to sign a contract, about when and where to meet and agree expectations of each other. Then your hour is all about you, your feelings and fears, your life and your issues. Don’t worry you can not offend your counsellor; you can answer back, disagree, get angry or be sad. You are the most important person in that room.

Over time changes will take place and you will feel differently about your issues, you may find more things to work on or you may end once you are back in a place you would like to be.  But speaking from experience counselling works and is life changing. So if this is the right time for you go to our website to look at the counselling offers we have available
